I think i have a cavity - how long is it ok to see the dentist?

Ok so im in college, and ive never had cavities. I dont eat much candy, soda is a bit of an issue with my family, and one day i looked inside my mouth to see if my teeth were whiter after i brushed a while and i notced a small black spot on my back molar in the groove. I think it might be a cavity ....

But there is no pain, no discomfort, no weird feelings, no sensitivy at ALL. It just feels like a normal, un affected, regualr old tooth. I just dont know how long its been there, because i dont really look at my teeth and stuff, i just brush and walk away

I made an appointment on Thursday to see the dentist, and my appointment isnt until March 18th even telling them im afraid its a cavity, so i was just wondering if thats ok to wait a bit to be looked at. I don't eat candy much at all, maybe once in a while

and now since i found this little bugger ive been brushing more often, drinking waters, and ive gone 2 days without soda. so is it ok to wait from now (Feb. 29th) until March. 18

Yeah, as long as there's no pain.

But if there is, you should schedule an appointment sooner.
Reply:if its a cavity it wont matter what you do. I just had one filled monday,.. its not bad,.. it only takes like 25 minutes.
Reply:If you have a cavity with no toothache you are lucky.

In an emergency, if you cannot get to a dentist, you can repair your own cavity. Very carefully drop a droplet of Crazy Glue into the cavity spot and hold your mouth open, without salivating, until it hardens.
Reply:its ok man, theres no pain involved. ive gotten 3, and every time they give you laughing gas or sleeping gas
Reply:it's probably been there for awhile...they don't just appear...so it's Ok to wait..as long as you aren't in pain, it's not a problem.
Reply:sure, just keep doing what ur doing, alot of people keep telling me rinsing with peroxide can stop a cavity's progress
Reply:No, it won't matter at all as long as you pay particular attention to brushing it well until you see the dentist. That way, the decay won't go any further, and your decision to lay off the sweets and soda until then is a good one. Don't panic, it's a minor thing, and you've caught it early. Good for you for being so observant!
Reply:im no dentist but i did go to dental assistant school, and im sure it will be ok until your appointment date, but like you said, do keep brushing and dont let it go cause it will get worse and you might end up having to get a root canal and a crown placed on it, but if you show up for your appointment youll probably just need to get a filling. If you have good insurance you can get a composite filling which will match the color of your tooth or if you dont have good insurance you will have to get an amalgam filling which is a gray filling
Reply:I was in the same boat and with three kids. The sooner you get them taken care of the cheaper it is. It gets worse then root canal. do whatever it takes to get it fixed ASAP or it will be big bucks and pain later. just keep yopur appointment and get it fixed then. 16 days wont get much worse. Soda got my teeth now im spending 14,000 on dental work cause i put it off. Good luck.
Reply:Cavities don't get worse very quickly so you will be OK, but you really need to see your dentist at least once a year to have them cleaned and have an exam. Waiting too long can cause you much trouble later on and you may be sorry.
Reply:It is fine to wait if you have no pain, swelling, bleeding, etc. Only 1 of my kids has had a cavity, and we waited close to 2 months to get it filled!

Please, if this is a cavity, do not let them use the amalgam filling (silver). Aside from being ugly, it is full of mercury. If your dentist does not place composite fillings (white), go somewhere else.
