Terrified of the dentist...?

I'm 16 and it has been years(like 6 or 7) since I've been to the dentist...my teeth aren't that bad but there is this one that is decaying and I want to get it fixed before it gets really bad. The only thing is, I am terrified of going. I don't know why...the times I did go nothing really bad happened. I've had cavities filled and it wasn't bad...I'm just scared! I'm to the point where I'm actually close to tears just writing this because I really don't want to go(even though I need to). I'm partly ashamed of going because I haven't been that good about taking care of my teeth and I'm also worried about how much work I'll need done and how much money it'll cost my parents(we're a pretty low income family). I just don't know what to do...

Terrified of the dentist...?
There are more like you out there.....talk to your Parents....and ask the dentist to prescribe a med that will calm your nerves..my mate is the same way..she turns white as a ghost when its time to go.......so her dentist has her take pill a couple of hours before...then I drive her to the appt...shes calm and the nervous edges are smoothed down....but do what it takes to take care of your teeth....
Reply:Sometimes it's possible for the dentist or your doctor to prescribe a pill you can take before you go to help you relax. My mother does this. Also, many cities have dental schools or other groups that provide free or discounted dental services to low income families. You might be able to find this in your area. If you're in school, ask the school nurse about it. Good luck on both issues.
Reply:just be brave and go. let the dentist know that you're scared of feeling pain("laughing gas" is great) . if you go to a pediatric dentist (yes) they are more experienced in dealing with scaredy cats (sorry) . trust me, you want to take care of your teeth now, you don't want dentures by age 30. plus icky teeth can cause other health problems.
Reply:It only gets worse and worse. The longer you put it off the more money it's going to cost and the more work you'll need done.

The dentist isnt really that bad, sounds like you've built it up to be something huge in your head. Do yourself a favor and call for an appointment tomorrow.

You'll be much happier
Reply:It is very important to go to the dentist regularly for checkups and to follow through with appointments for restorations (fillings, crowns, etc.) There is nothing to be afraid of really. If the experience with the dentist is scary with needles and everything, then it is best to try to prevent cavities, so then you won't have to go through it :)

But since you are aware of decay, you really have to get through it! There are medications to reduce anxiety and nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) can be used also.

I am a dental hygienist and I see many people with dentures - even people in their 30s! That is way too young and you do not want that. So get the decayed teeth taken care of and go for cleanings every 6 months. If you are low income, there are dental schools %26amp; dental hygiene schools that can do your cleanings and restorations for a better price than a regular dentist office. But I cannot stress how important going is! Most people don't realize it until it is too late.

Going to the dentist can be a pleasant experience. Most dentists, assistants, and hygienists are friendly and work well with all people. We like to do whatever we can to make it a comfortable experience. Many offices even have TVs mounted to the walls to help patients relax! Or you can bring your own mp3 player and listen to it, anything you want. Let the staff know that you're a little afraid and they will help you get through it. I hope I'm not making it sound like it's bad that you are scared - I definitely understand! But you are capable of overcoming this! Just relax. You will be fine, I promise!
