When to take your baby/toddler to his first dentist appointment?

My son is almost one year old, and I keep hearing conflicting information. Some say not to take him until he is two, until he gets molars etc. and some say to take him now. I know my family has hereditary bad teeth (weak enamel and very acidic saliva=bad teeth) so I want to take him as soon as appropriate...

Also, what do you do if you are having a hard time finding a dentist that will see a baby for anything but emergency care?

When to take your baby/toddler to his first dentist appointment?
i believe that has soon has your child gets teeth it is time to go to the dentist...even tho they might not do anything apart from count how many teeth they have, i took my daughters with me every time i went and all they did was count (and still do!!) you could always call the dentist and ask them...

good luck x
Reply:I don't know about the emergency care but what I would suggest is that you should take your child only when YOU feel it is the right time because only you will know what is right for your baby nobody else can tell you that. I hope i helped.
Reply:you need to take him/her to a dentist when him/her gets his first tooth.
Reply:pediatric dentist for cleaning and dental care starting at 12 months then every 6 months there after for the rest of life
Reply:When you take a 1 yr. old to see a dentist it's not for a check-up. It's to develope a rapport between him and his dentist. He won't grow up with a fear of the dentist as so many people (including children) do. He will not fear the dentist that he has grown up with. They do have dentist out there who specialize in young kids. Ask a dentist office if you can't find one in the phone book. :-)
Reply:I took my kids when they were both two. A good way to find a dentist is maybe ask your son's pediatrician or ask around maybe your friends who have kids that are older and have an established dentist. That is how we found our dentist from some friends of ours and my kid's love their dentist.
Reply:have 3 kids and my pediatrician always told me at one year of age they go to the dentist and then the dentist says come back every 6 months. i had called my insurance provider to get a listing of dentists that would take small children because when i went through the phone book everyone i called said they dont take young kids. so im sure if you contact your insurance provider and tell them the problem you having they can get you some listings. take care of it now. my best friend has awefull teeth and her kids have the same teeth (dentist called them soft, so they are more cavity prone) so by the time he was 2 he had a huge cavity in the back of his front tooth so now its been fixed but the filling is a dark one (insurance wouldnt pay for a white filling) so he has to walk around with one dark tooth that is very noticeable untill he looses that baby tooth. i bet if she had taken him at 1 year of age it would have been caught sooner
Reply:I am concerned about my 2 yr. olds teeth and have asked her pediatrician several times. She keeps telling me not until 3. Maybe even 5. But all of the books and magazines say 1 or after their first tooth. The trick is finding a dentist that does the pediatrics because not all do.
Reply:I took my son at 1yr old b/c he doesn't make tooth enamel and his teeth were breaking off. I think taking them once they have teeth is a good time to go that way you can catch any issues ahead of time and they will be familiar with the dentist office easing an anxiety later.
Reply:My dentist told me to wait until he's three. But from the time he turned one I've been taking him with me to my appointments and the dentist lets him watch what they do to me and then when I'm done he'll let him sit in the chair just to see that it's not so scary. I would talk to your dentist and see what they recommend with your family history of bad teeth. They may start seeing your son now or they may refer you to someone who works mostly with children,
Reply:I take them by at least a year. I have 4 kids and none of my kids every had dental problems and they didn't go until 5 but #4 was different. He had problems by 18 we had to pay out 1700 to fix his teeth. If we had taken him in at 1 year or even soon it wouldn't of been nearly as bad. But I thought he would be like my older kids and have great teeth. My 10 still has no cavities.
Reply:When first tooth comes in or no later than first b-day. :)

My daughter, born with a cleft lip/palate, was seen at a very early age, obviously.

You can take your son now, if he has teeth.

I take my kids to the head of peds dentistry at Children's/Pgh, he's part of the cleft team. You shouldn't have a hard time finding a dentist who can accommodate you. :)
Reply:I started taking my son when he was 17 months old. There are dentists who specialize in younger kids. It boils down to your personal needs and beliefs. To make things easier on a younger child, 'play' dentist at home before going. This helps the child to not be afraid, on appointment day.
