Root canal tooth cracked a bit...?

I got a root canal two or three years ago and I never got a crown. Now I have a small chip/crack on top of the tooth... [happened this morning] Does this mean I have to get another root canal?

And our family is in no position to go to the dentist right now. I also have no insurance.

No you do not need another root canal. You need to get the tooth crowned. Root canals take necrotic(infected) tissue out of the canals along with the nerve. Now you have no blood supply to the tooth and it becomes more brittle over time thus more easily fractured(chipped). Get a crown and if the chip is small you can bond(white filling) the break. Crowns are expensive but insurance may pay up to 80%.
Reply:Probably the most frequent reason teeth are lost after root canals is that they are not adequately restored. Back teeth with root canals almost always should have crowns placed to protect the teeth from breakage. If at all possible you should visit a dentist. A dentist can determine the amount of damage your tooth has sustained. If the root canal material is exposed to mouth for 30 days or more the canal can become contaminated and you may need to have it retreated. If you tooth has sustained a crack that travels into the bone you may require an extraction.
