Brushing teeth?

This may sound weird but I have a compulsion to brush my teeth immediately after I eat in order to prevent cavities. Dentists would say this is good, but it interrupts the flow of many social activities. I wish I could be like everyone else and just brush 2 or 3 times a day at the same time every day. I especially feel compelled to brush after a starchy or sugary snack. Again, this should be fine. But I get such anxiety because I may be at the mall and cannot brush right away or having dinner with friends and family and don't want to immediately run to brush my teeth after just finishing dining. However, the anxiety builds until I do it. I know there is an OCD component here, but I would like to hear preferably from a DENTIST what would be reasonable in terms of how frequent after dining do I need to brush my teeth in order to keep them in good shape / prevent cavities or worse. If you are not a dentist and have good suggestions, please respond to. I know there is a balance here.
