Help Im Scared of the DENTIST!!?

I am beyond scared of dentistry work, i know its wimpish and stupid but i really really cant handle my dentist visits.

I have a family history of very weak teeth and despite carefull brushing and daily flossing i have had to have numerous fillings. My dentist is lovely but i really cant face going... and at the moment i desperatly need a filling and asm in pain with it now. i have a problem with anesthetic injections... they dont work on me to the degree they should its a family problem but they only ever work to about 10% of what they should so are not worth having. this means during past fillings i have been in agony which is why im now to frightened to go.

im only 17 and really scared of what to do about it. can i be sedated? and how would i go about it... im broke so cant afford fancy private treatment so am stuck using nhs.. someone please help i have toothache now :-(

I suggest you ring your dentist and tell them your fears and anxiety about the dentist and injections. Ask if you can have nitrous oxide instead (laughing gas) which will briefly put you out or a sedative to take beforehand to calm you down.(or possibly both). Find out your options before you go.

Whatever it will be better in the end than having horrible rotting black teeth
Reply:Your going to have to man up and see the Dentist! If you close your eyes and just breathe it will be easier.
Reply:Our dentist has alternatives if the numbing medicine doesn't work, they have pills to relax you clear up to knocking you out. Talk to your dentist about alternatives. (For improving the health of your teeth, try a Soni-care tooth brush. They are between 40-90 dollars at Wally world but they WORK!)
Reply:There are things that can be done. "weak teeth" is a bs statement. Sometimes careful brushing and flossing isn't enough, due to the bacteria. Add 5 to 15 grams of xylitol (gum or mints) to your diet spread out over the day...it helps kill bacteria. There are prescription rinses that should be used 5 days in a row once a month to cut bacteria (Peridex).

Anesthetic: most of my patients are "phobic" (my specialty) and pretty much 95% of them don't numb adequately with typical anesthetics (most common is 2%lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinepherine). Ask your dentist to use Citanest Forte or Septocaine (he needs to have more than just one type). About 2% of my patients work better with a blend of 2 different anesthetics, not just more of the same kind. Your dentist is probably not licensed for deep sedation, but could probably prescribe some sedating medication like 10 to 15mg of valium, 20mg of dalmane or something similar. Full sedation is very expensive. Be very insistent about your needs, don't let them poo-poo you fears and concerns. For your toothache now, try taking 4 tablets of advil (as long as you are not allergic) every 6 to 8 hours. If you have breakthrough pain, try taking 2 extra-strength tylenols (not more advil) every 4 to 6 hours,

Good luck!
Reply:Hey x

You really need your tooth sorted out,if you want sediation you would probs have to have it sorted out in a hospital [[meaning being on a verry long waiting list getting more and more pain]]

Why not try taking panadoll 30 mins before your appointment so that you do have some pain relive beforehand

My advice is really just go for it ..once its done you will feel soo much better and pleased with yourself you've got it done ..

Ask for a earlymorning appointment, then you dont have all day thinking of it (( i always take early morning appointments ))

It should take say 15 mins..if you do have the needle which is only a pin prick the dentist will wait for about 10 mins for it too work then do it so you will proberly be there 20 mins its not that long then you have a no painful tooth

If you leave it .. it will REALLY hurt and then have to have it taken out

Am sending you lots and lots of gd luck vibes x

You can doo this !!

p:s sorry about my spelling !
