Do I have to go to the dentist?

Hey, I am 14 years old and bad teeth sorta runs in the family...

I am not afraid of the dentist but I have to go a lot more then most people for cavities. Getting back to the question though, my parents are forcing me to go next week and I am petrified because I always swallow constinently and when my mouth is open, that prevents me from swallowing. This makes me panic and I start to freak out and scream... I do not want to go and have tried all methods such as laughing gas to stop my panicing... Nothing has worked for me and was wondering if my parents can force me to go. Once again I am 14, so don't I have some sort of rights to whether I choose to go or not?

P.S. I don't want to be rude but I want to know if I can or can't be forced to go... I do not care if there are other methods to keep me calm or a lecture on what my teeth will turn out like when I'm older. THANKS!

Do I have to go to the dentist?
Hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but yes- at 14 you can be forced to go. You have no real say in the matter, really. You are a minor, and have very few rights. In things relating to your health and health care- your parents pay the bills, and get to call the shots. And if you were mine, yeah- I'd force you too. I'd hog tie you if necessary, knock you out and get it done if you wouldn't cooperate otherwise.
Reply:It's simple - just tell the dentist that you feel like you need to swallow a lot, and ask him if it's OK if he'll stop for a second when you raise your hand. The dentist wants you to be comfortable - my guess is that he won't mind a bit if you do this.
Reply:Don't feel bad I had a horrible experience as a child and refused to go to the dentist. The trick that worked for me is to listen to music(CD player, ipod) and focus on breathing. It was tough at first but soon I got the hang of it. Having your teeth cleaned is really important not only does it effect the way your teeth look and feel but if there is a cavity it might get so bad that will have to have the whole tooth removed which will only make you situation worse. Also having clean teeth helps to keep your heart healthy and stops plaque and other things from getting in there. I hope this helps and good luck!!
Reply:WELL, PLEASE GO. DENTISTS HAVE SEEN AND HEARD IT ALL. THEY WILL MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT GOING THERE.
Reply:listen to Dr. Albert
Reply:Yes they can force you to go. You are still a child. Get your teeth taken care of your you will end up making them worse and having to eventually get them pulled and get dentures. So just try to relax. Dentist appoinments really are not that long. Maybe go for an early morning appointment so you don't have to think about it all day. You will be fine.
