How can i help my family, i need to make money since we're having trouble.?

I'm fifteen, this fall my father had open heart surgery. he's a dentist, so he was out of work for about six weeks. in that time we lost a lot of money, and i mean a lot. well according to the calendar its spring now. and our money situation hasn't gotten any better. In fact its causing conflict with my parents and my parents and me. I can't get a job at the grocery store like other kids my age cause i dont' really have the time or way to get there after school. But i need help please! How can i make money? online? anything. i just don't want to stress my parents anymore and be able to fund my own needs. Thanks for your input. =)

Reply:I'm guessing that you are use to having money and have grown up rather privileged. The truth of the matter is that if you go and get a job, of any sort, you'll probably make your father feel like he is failing you. Getting a job to learn responsibility is a great thing but getting a job to give money to your parents is something completely different. You should talk to your mom and dad and see if the finances have really gotten to the point that they need your assistance. If they do, then by all means do whatever you need to do to help out but ask first.

Im not sure where you can get a job online at but what if you got a job with a friend like at the store or something and asked them to take you back and forth maybe give them like a 20 for helping you or something like that.

Reply:First of all, I commend you for your responsibility. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that you do not live in a large town or city and that is why getting to a job at a store might be a challenge. The idea that you have someone help you get there is a good one, but in light of the fact that spring is here, and it has been a weird winter, I would bet that you have neighbours that could use a hand with spring cleanup on their properties.





I started doing spring cleanup when I was 12 (raking twigs, dethatching lawns, clearing leaves from flowerbeds etc.) and used the money I made to pay for clothes and personal items so my mom could use the money she made for family stuff (she was a single mom who did her best, but a little pressure off her was good for the family). I saved what I did not need, and it helped pay for university.





Once you get a few places where you are doing yard work (and I'm not going to fool you, it is hard work) you will likely keep them through the summer (weeding, lawn mowing), fall (raking, seeding) and into the winter. If you have a few faithful clients, they will hold you in good stead for a while. Word of mouth will increase your client load if you do a good job, and you'd be surprised how much you can make. Your neighbours will likely respect you for trying to pitch in to the family expenses in a difficult time.





Your parents may not want you to be giving them money, but making a little money to support your own expenses (clothes, school stuff, field trips, socializing) will both take a bit of pressure off your family, and give you a little more say at what the money gets spent on - since it is money you earned. This may sound hokey, but the money you earn means a lot more than the money that is handed to you.
Reply:I commend you for wanting to help your dad. You're only 15, so you are limited by law what you can do for a job. Until you're 16, you can babysit, walk dogs, cut grass, and even tutor other kids if you're able to. Your dad is a dentist, so he basically gets paid when the insurance checks come in. It's possible he's getting disability too. Does your mom work? If it's as bad as you say, then she should be working to help support the family. Your dad is probably too proud to accept money from you, so the best thing you can do is not ask for anything extra and help out in any way you can. Don't worry, things will get better and your parents' stress will go away.
