My 2 yr old son has a grey tooth... Is this serious??

About a month ago, my son fell and hit one of his front teeth (no chip). He's been fine ever since, but about a week later, the tooth turned an unattractive shade of grey.

This happened to my little sister when we were younger, and the doctor said it was no problem because it was her first set of teeth. Once the second set came in, she got her pearly whites back.

It doesn't seem to bother him or cause him pain. We brush his teeth every day, so I doubt it could be a hygiene problem.

We have a family dentist appointment coming up in November... Should I call the dentist now and go in earlier to get this taken care of, or should I wait it out?

Knowledgeable answers only, please!

This happened to my son around that same age. You have to go to a pediatric dentist to have it checked out. They want to know if it is loose, will check for infection and will tell you how to deal with it.

When a tooth gets banged badly, some blood leaks into it and causes it to turn gray. 25% of the time, the tooth will lighten, 25% of the time it will turn darker and half the time it will remain the same. It just depends. If it was a bad bang, the tooth could die.

My son is 4 now and his tooth actually lightened up and you almost can't tell it's gray any longer. There could be some damage to the permanent tooth underneath but the dentist said you can only find that out when it comes in.

Good luck.
Reply:You should take him to a pediatric dentist. The tooth root may have been damaged and it should be checked so that it doesn't get infected. Don't wait until November.
Reply:it might be dead from when he hit it...i would call the dentist and ask about it...they'll probably just wait until u come in...it'll most likely be fine because hes going to lose that tooth in a few years anyways!
Reply:I think his tooth was traumatized and damaged. Fortunately, it didn't cause him any pain. But i think the grey shade means the tooth had died. Meaning the nerves do not function any more.
Reply:Most of the time, a grey tooth is a dead tooth. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but would go ahead and call the dentist. It never hurts to ask. Since it's a baby tooth, the dentist might not worry about it.
Reply:i think it will be fine. those are just his milk teeth. they'll fall out and he'll get his permanent teeth in a few years. but take him to the dentist just to be sure =)
Reply:it's not a big deal. When i was 3, i rode my trike off the front porch and hit my front tooth. it turned gray and stayed that way until the tooth eventually fell out as normal. So, just expect the tooth to stay that way for a while.
Reply:I would call him now. Usually a gray tooth means the root is dead.
Reply:oh its a dead tooth, when they lose there first set of teeth it will come out on its own and be replaced by his second set!
