Has anyone had a rootcanal done and no pain med. afterward?

I had a root canal Wed. and afterward they didn't prescribe me any pain med. and I always usually get it. this place said we dont do that. I was like hmm ok. and they said ibuprofen would help and it doesnt they specifically said do not call us bc we wont prescribe it. I asked my doctor to then, my family physician and she said the dentist has to. Anyways also, they said they thought I might've had an infection and said they'd preform anyway, can they do that? Usually I thought they give an antibiotic before and schedule again?? Please tell me if they were allowed anything they did. and where I can turn for pain med.? Besides another dentist, we can only go to that one.

Most of the other answers are correct. The point in doing a root canal on a patient is to kill the nerve of the tooth that is causing pain. So, after the root canal (and deadened nerve), there is no pain and no need for pain medication.

Reply:This happened to me when I went to bootcamp in the Navy, and I had a bump about the size of a pea on the tooth where they did the canal on. This hurt like hell, but they gave me a couple of ibuprofen and told me to quit whining.

My face hurt like crap BEFORE the root canal, but only a little bit afterward.





Take 800 mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day.
Reply:I had a root canal done when I was 16 and they did not give me any pain meds when they were done but my tooth did not hurt when the numbing was gone. The reason that a dentist gives you antibiotics before they do the root canal is to yes clear up the infection but the infection can also cause you to not be able to get numb so sometimes they would not even be able to do the root canal. If you were really swollen then they would put you on the antibiotics first. Since they opened the tooth up and removed the nerve of the tooth the infection had a way to drain so the antibiotics may not be needed. They would have also put some medicine inside the canal to help with any infection that may still be there. Doing the root canal today instead of putting you on antibiotics first is still normal. They did not do anything wrong.

The dentist might give you an antibiotic if infection is present, but not always, If the root canal will remove the infected area %26amp; it's not bad, they might go ahead %26amp; do it.





I'm wondering: why can you only go to "that one dentist?" If the root canal was done by a specialist, go to your regular dentist. A patient always has the right to seek another opinion , regardless of who performed the procedure. Keep looking until you feel you're being treated properly. Good luck!

Reply:yes. I had a root canal and then went straight back to work. I took a tylenol over-the-counter. It really wasn't that bad. My gums were tender, but that was it.
