Can dentist tell you smoke even if you are quitting?

I have been smoking for a couple months and am starting to quit. I wasnt a heavy smoker maybe like two or four a day. I have been starting to use the whitening shrips. do you think he will be able to tell? My dentist is pretty much a family friend and also my sister works for him so i dont want them to find out. What do you think?

Your friendly dentist may find out, but if he know you are trying to quit, he probably congratulate and encourage you. Nothing to be embarrassed about. Doctors know that smokers sometimes have "relapse" when they try to quit. Let him know you are trying and get him on your side.

Reply:Probaly so but, nobody else will find out be cause that is patient confidentiality. be sides who care if you smoke and if you really dont want them to know, go to a different dentist.
Reply:yep he'll know. people who do not smoke can sniff out those who do. cig smoke stays in your hair, on your clothes, on your skin, and especially in your mouth, even if you've showered, put on clean clothes, brushed your teeth, used mouthwash, and don't smoke before seeing the dentist. he will still know.
Reply:Yes, they can tell by the condition of the tissues in your mouth. Besides the obvious reasons not to smoke, smoking is extremely bad for your gums and teeth. You can pretty much count on losing 2 teeth for every 10 years of smoking.
Reply:I think you are underage and paranoid he will find out you are smoking and tell the family, and then you will be in trouble..By the way, how do you START to quit???? Why don't you just STOP !!????
Reply:Yes he will be able to tell that you smoke. Smoking creates these little spots on the back of your palate and are easily detectible even if you have only been smoking a short while and are a light smoker anyways. I am very sorry but once you open your mouth your dentist the hygienist and his assistant will be able to tell.
Reply:OOOO YEAH, BABY! they can tell by the periodontal tissues in your mouth.
Reply:Your dentist may be able to tell that you smoke from the staining on your teeth. Stain that you probably can't see on your back molars or on the lingiual side of your teeth (the side that faces your tongue). You would be surprised what us dental assistants and dentists see on patients teeth that you can not see.





Maybe you can say you drink alot of coffee and tea.. hehe Good Luck!!
